Kenneth was born in Sheffield on March 17, 1925 to Edwin and Miriam Mellor, their fifth child. He was the second youngest of six children, and the only boy.

Kenneth’s mother died when he was 10. His father, a labourer in a steel works, died three years later. Kenneth and his youngest sister were raised by one of their older sisters.
